Cornwall is renowned for its fishing ports and it was a couple's fascination with the industry that provided the inspiration for a new guide to all that swims in Cornish waters.

A Guide To Cornish Fish covers everything from shark to shellfish, sardine to sprat, pollack to pouting, offering digestible information on more than 100 edible marine creatures common to our shores.

Jenny Scolding, who has written the guide with her husband Bill, said: "We were sitting down in Cadgwith Cove one day, listening to tourists struggling to identify some fish in a nearby fish box. So we thought a small book might help them. Fishing communities are one of the reasons tourists come to Cornwall and they are genuinely curious about fish and the fishing industry."

Bill grew up in Helston, while Jenny regularly visited Cornwall as a child. They moved their family to Cornwall in 1986.

Jenny, who works as a freelance writer, previously worked as a television and film researcher in Ottawa, New York and London. Bill has worked as a writer and graphic designer in Cornwall for 26 years and his walking guides, co-written with Robin Bates, have become hugely popular.

As well as being a guide to fish, the couple's latest book offers an insight into fishing past and present, exploring the politics, history and conservation of the industry. The guide even introduces readers to some of the characters that have created the story behind Cornish fishing.

"All the information is accompanied by vibrant illustrations, which hopefully makes the guide accessible to both young and old," said Jenny.

"We decided to create a simple book, suitable for the lay person, which would answer some basic questions and would also give people a better understanding of the fishing industry."

So whether you are fisherman with a trawler or a small boy standing in a rock pool with a green net tied to end of a bamboo stick, A Guide To Cornish Fish will be sure to help you identify your catch. A Guide To Cornish Fish is published by Serpentine Design at £4.99.
