A FARMER and his wife have appeared in court charged with flouting health and safety laws.

Philip and Linda Medland stood side-by-side in the dock at Truro Crown Court on Friday.

During a brief hearing the couple spoke only to confirm their names and to enter not guilty pleas to two counts each in a prosecution brought by the Health and Safety Executive.

The couple are partners of F Medland and Son, Langstone Farm, Coads Green, Launceston.

Charges came following an accident involving a worker named Philip Ede who was employed to work in the company's logging operation. Both defendants face charges of flouting health and safety laws at Trefrize Wood, near Coads Green, on April 19 last year.

They are both charged, as employers and partners in the firm, with failing to ensure the health, safety and welfare at work of all employees, including Mr Ede, in the firms logging operation.

The second count relates to an allegation of failing to make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the health and safety risks to employees.

A trial has been scheduled to begin on June 17. The couple were released on unconditional bail until their next court appearance.
