REDRUTH 39 CLIFTON 11
A powerful second half performance from the Reds saw them record an emphatic National 2 South win over their visitors at the Recreation Ground reports Bill Hooper.
The first half was a different affair with Clifton not doubt feeling aggrieved to be trailing 7-3 having dominated play for much of the opening period with full back Will Pomphrey a constant threat in attack.
The Bristolians deservedly took the lead after just 7 minutes with a penalty kicked by fly-half Bradley Barnes.
The visitors should have scored a couple of tries prior to their penalty success, however a combination of sound Redruth defence and Clifton errors saw the chances go begging.
Redruth hit back with a try on 14 minutes following a scrum near the Clifton line. No.8 Tom Duncan was once again the beneficiary of his packs hard work to dot down over the line.
Ashley Hoskin playing at fly-half kicked the conversion to put his side 7-3 up and the score remained the same until half-time.
Redruth needed an early score in the second half and they got thanks to some great play from Tom Notman.
Hoskin kicked a penalty to stretch the Reds advantage to 15-3, before Clifton got a score back as the Reds found themselves down to fourteen men, as prop Craig Williams was yellow carded, their skipper John Levis was driven over from a catch-and-drive.
Redruth upped their game with the ever-willing Greg Goodfellow at scrum-half pulling the strings. The former Scotland U.20 player made a great break to set-up a try for hooker Richard Brown. Paul Thirlby on as a replacement added the extras.
Barnes again cut the deficit with a second penalty, before Redruth staged a big finish with three tries in the final moments.
Redruth's bonus point try was scored by prop Darren Jacques who was driven over by the pack from a catch-and-drive.
Luke Collins charged over from a lineout to claim his side's fifth try in the scoreboard corner, then with the final play Fraser Kellythorn was put clear to canter in with Thirlby adding the extras with the final kick of the game.
