A trapped driver awaits the emergency services to arrive after he was caught up in a two-vehicle crash on a busy, wet road in north Cornwall.

This image was taken just minutes after the smash on the road in the north of the county.

Both the silver Hyundai ix35 and silver Honda Insight were written off.

On hearing the loud bang, residents rushed out from their houses to see if they could help the injured male driver who was trapped inside the Honda.

Such was the force of the impact, the driver's door had caved in completely.

The accident happened on the hectic A39 running through Camelford on Friday at around 2.45pm.

It happened at the junction with Treclago View, a cul-de-sac as one of the cars emerged onto the main road.

Treclago View is part of a new housing estate which leads onto the section of A39 which has a 30mph speed limit.

An eye-witness said: "The driver of one of the cars was still trapped and was awaiting emergency services.

"The other driver was being comforted in one of the houses.

"The scene highlights to me the potential for accidents with new housing estates with two islands on the main road at the junction."

The injured man was freed from the vehicle by firefighters and was airlifted to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, where he remained last night.

A police spokesman said: "We understand the gentleman's injuries were not life-threatening but were nevertheless serious.

"The other driver did not suffer any serious injuries and was able to get out of the vehicle unassisted."

The road in both directions was closed for several hours while the debris was cleared away.
