Penzance Town Council has chosen its new member.
Christopher Drew was coopted onto the council after going up against five other local people for the seat.
He appealed to members with his upbeat plans to encourage more young people to get involved in local politics.
"I think we need more young people on all our councils," he told last night's meeting at St John's Hall.
"In Penzance and other areas of Cornwall more and more young people are being forced to leave for studies, jobs and housing. These people need our support so they feel they can remain here and grow up and have a family.
"If these young people continue to leave there is a genuine risk that our reliance on seasonal trade and second home owners could put our economy at risk.
"I want to make sure Penzance is at the forefront of Cornish growth, there is great potential in our town and it needs to be realised."
Mr Drew will replace Margaret Freeman who resigned over a row about declarations of interest.
