Awful weather might have spelled misery for many, but two sportsmen took advantage of the blustery winds whisking up huge waves off the Cornish coast.

Kite surfer Dom Moore and windsurfer Ross Williams got into their wetsuits to enjoy the storm waves crashing into Porthleven.

Observers said the pair were putting on an astonishing display, riding waves as high as seven metres.

However, the recent conditions might not have ruined all the fun for the less adventurous after it was announced that festive entertainment – postponed due to bad weather – will return to Plymouth on Thursday.

The Military Wives Choir will be among a line-up of acts at a free party, starting at 4pm, which will include dancing and singing on a stage at the top of Cornwall Street in an event planned for the city's Christmas lights switch-on that was a washout last month.
