A FUNDRAISING event in Stithians on Saturday (Jan 12) aims to support families affected by last month's shootings at a school in the United States.
Twenty six people, including 18 young children, died when Ryan Lanza, who later shot himself, launched his attack at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.
Saturday morning's fundraiser has been organised by Margo Standley, who said: "I live in Stithians but I'm from Easton, Connecticut, just 20 minutes from Newtown.
"As you can imagine, it's been nothing short of heart wrenching watching the news and learning of this hideous event.
"Having felt helpless for days, I have decided to organise a fundraising event for the families of Sandy Hook, to help pay for funeral costs and anything that may help allow them to get through this immensely difficult time.
"Newtown is a typical, peaceful and picturesque New England town with a community not unlike mine here in Stithians."
The fundraising event is being held at Stithians Village hall from 10am until noon.
"I hope Cornish people will come and show their support for a tragedy that is far too close to home for me," added Mrs Standley.
