Treacherous conditions as snow results in widespread ice on Westcountry's roads

The Met Office has warned that ice is set to become widespread on Westcountry roads following the heavy snow and rain.

Councils were yesterday organising gritters to hit the roads most at risk in Devon and Cornwall.

As the snow eases across Devon in particular ice is expected to become the main hazard over the weekend.

According to the Exeter-based Met Office some fleeting flurries of snow might appear in parts of east Devon but not on the scale of yesterday's near-blizzard conditions.

Winds experienced yesterday are expected to ease by today with night temperatures hovering near freezing causing frost and ice.

Robin Thwaytes, forecaster at the Exeter-based office, said a pall of heavy cloud would hang over the county for much of the weekend. He said: "Ice will affect roads in east Devon. The UK as a whole will be hit pretty hard but because of our slightly milder climate it won't be as bad."

West Cornwall is expected to see the worst of the ice across the county with weather something of a mixed bag over the next few days.

Mr Thwaytes said said: "Rain and low temperatures will lead to ice forming generally across the county.

"While rain was heavy in parts overnight Thursday, we'll only see showers on Saturday, between 1 to 5 mm at most.

"However, some spots will see a break in the rain with a bit of sunshine breaking through.

"By tomorrow there won't be much rain around and there should be sun in parts."
