A FURIOUS row has broken out over plans to possibly relocate Carn Brea running track to Par.
Last week the West Briton revealed plans to refurbish the leisure centre by selling its car park and the athletics track.
Options include building a new track at Camborne Science and International Academy or investing in the existing track at Par.
The recommendation is likely to be put to Cornwall Council's Cabinet next month.
Following the proposal, Cornwall councillor Dave Biggs for Camborne West, who is also the chairman of the Community Network Area, said: "Local members were unaware of plans to move the running track to anywhere other than within our local area.
"We have subsequently been led to believe that receipts from any land sale could be used to support Carrick Leisure facilities.
"It beggars belief that we should be asset-stripped to provide leisure funding for the wealthier areas.
"Local members will require that the capital receipts from any sale of the running track are used to relocate the running track locally and that a new leisure centre is built to replace the ageing facilities at Carn Brea."
Councillor Jude Robinson for Camborne North has described the move as a 'smash and grab raid'.
And councillor Joyce Duffin for Mount Hawke and Portreath said: "With the leisure centre in dire need of refurbishment there is no justification for spending any receipts anywhere else.
"I think the least we need is a guarantee that all receipts are spent on the centre.
"People are concerned about the running track and we need a guarantee that it will stay in the area."
