Heavy rain washes out every game in league

The entire Jolly's Drinks Cornwall Cricket League suffered from a wash-out on Saturday. A band of heavy showers spread down across the length of the county around lunchtime. Some areas received torrential downpours, making play impossible on already wet grounds. It was the first time since early July in 2009 that not a ball was able to be bowled in any of the 14 divisions. In the ECB Cornwall Premier League, coincidentally, the same set of games had been washed out on July 7. It means the title will be decided between Werrington and St Just without the pair having played each other. They did meet in the Premier 50/50 Cup final at Camborne at the end of July, when Werrington ran out comfortable winners. St Just's hopes of revenge on Saturday were frustrated by the rain showers that set in late morning at Cape Road, after the north Cornwall side had travelled. A heavy downpour just before 1pm meant there was no hope of play. The six points each for the cancellation suited the visitors more and means their lead remains at 11 points with just three games to play, which includes today's fixtures. However, if the weather forecast is to be believed, there might well be another round of cancellations. Werrington are due to host Truro, with St Just making the visit to Grampound Road. Should there be no play today, the title might be over as early as next Sunday night. Werrington are at home to Falmouth next Saturday and, if win and St Just fail to beat both Camborne and Truro next weekend, that would effectively be that. The game at Boscawen Park was originally rearranged for Sunday, September 9, due to the wedding of Gavin Edwards. With Cornwall's first Minor Counties Championship final, against Buckinghamshire, now set for the same day and venue, the Premier League game has been brought forward. Elsewhere on Saturday, games at Truro (versus Paul) and Callington (versus Troon) succumbed to the elements. Grampound Road travelled to Camborne but a lunchtime downpour at Roskear ended matters. It was a similar story at Falmouth where St Austell were the visitors. An "early tea" taken but the cancellation was confirmed at 2pm. St Austell are due to play Camborne at Wheal Eliza today, with strugglers Paul hosting Callington and Troon entertaining Falmouth at Treslothan Road.
