Young children donned caps and gowns at a graduation ceremony in Cornwall.

The Children's University event celebrated the achievements of 50 Cornish children at Tremough University Campus, near Falmouth.

The proud youngsters were presented with certificates by Neil Burden, deputy leader of Cornwall Council and cabinet member for children's services, after taking part in a range of learning activities outside class.

Lisa Neville, of Cornwall Learning which manages the Children's University in the county, described it as a "lovely occasion".

"We want to raise aspirations and holding our celebration at a real university campus helps to create a positive, lasting impression of university life," she added.

"We hope they will consider it when making choices later in their education."

Children aged six and above and from schools and clubs stretching from Penzance to Bodmin took part. The organisation covers a wide range of topics and interests, such as sports, music, performing arts, ICT and creative arts. The idea is to encourage children to seek out different activities that will " extend and enrich" their learning, discover new interests, reveal their talents and become independent learners. All the youngsters honoured last week had to attend 65 hours of learning activities and all achieved silver awards and above. Loren Trevorrow, of Mounts Bay Academy, was presented with a medal for achieving the gold "degree" with more than 400 hours of attendance. She joined Children's University when she was at Ludgvan Primary School and has now been selected for the Cornwall girl's cricket under-13 development Squad. "It has given me confidence to do more extra-curricular activities, I've met new friends and had so much fun," she added.
