CALLINGTON Town Council has outlined new measures to tackle antisocial behaviour at a car park in the town, which could involve seizing and crushing cars belonging to repeat offenders.
The Saltash Road car park has been identified as a trouble hot-spot by local residents and now the council is looking at taking action against people who continue to use it in an antisocial manner.
Cornwall councillor Andrew Long said: "The problems with antisocial behaviour have centred around drivers using the car park as a skidpan during the evenings, and playing loud music, sounding their horns, and generally causing disturbance, often well into the early hours of the following morning."
The council is now looking at taking tough action against people who fail to heed to the warning that antisocial behaviour will not be tolerated.
Mr Long said: "The council is preparing for a targeted response to this by using systems capable of capturing offending vehicles' information and evidence."
The Mebyon Kernow councillor hopes that the introduction of these measures will lead to the prosecution of offenders.
"If this is achieved, then we will prosecute and, using Section 59 of the Police Reform Act, we could confiscate and ultimately crush the vehicles of repeat offenders," he said.
Mr Long highlighted that it is only a small minority of people causing problems in the car park and that innocent people using it as a meeting place are not being targeted by the new measures.
"However, a small group of persistent offenders are causing concern to the nearby residents and lawful users of the car park and we are determined to solve the problems," Mr long said.
Residents are being encouraged to report instances of antisocial behaviour in the town by calling Cornwall Council on 0300 1234232. Alternatively you can fill in a form online by going to www.cornwall.gov.uk
