MORE than a hundred 14-year-old girls are getting sexual health treatment and advice every year from a centre at Truro.

A doctor from the sexual health 'hub' at the Royal Cornwall Hospital said the children she saw were getting "younger and younger".

The youngest child seen in the past three years was 11.

Health professionals said it was important children got the right information in a world where they were "bombarded" with sexual imagery, particularly through the internet.

Kathryn Eccleston, who runs the drop-in sexual health service, said: "I feel that we are seeing greater numbers of young people coming to get sexual health information and screening.

"The young people I see say they're consenting (to sexual activity) but they're not necessarily enjoying it.

"A lot of young people seem to be having sex for all the wrong reasons."

The service, called The Hub, offers a confidential service and parents of children seeking advice would not be informed.

Mothers told the West Briton they would want their young children to come to them for advice but also valued the service offered by the centre as a way of helping youngsters who were not comfortable speaking about it to their parents.
