THE widow of a Perranporth fisherman who died while angling off the Cornish coast, has joined a choir in his honour to raise funds for the Fisherman's Mission. Sue Hendriks, 57, and her daughter, Jennie Ansell, are joining the 70-strong Fish Wives choir for its recording in Hastings.
She contacted Jane Dolby, from Leigh-on-Sea, who set-up the group to raise funds for Fishermen's Mission.The charity helped her following the loss of her fisherman husband, Colin, who went missing at sea in 2008. His body was not found for eight months.
The choir is recording its first single in April under the watchful gaze of Brit award-winning producer, Jon Cohen, who has worked with major artists including Adele, Mary J Blige, George Michael, and Lady Gaga. The single, which is being released digitally via iTunes, includes the hymn For Those in Peril on the Sea a rendition of When the Boat Comes In, the theme from the popular television series.
Mrs Hendriks said the song is a fitting tribute to her late husband and a way of saying thank you to the charity.She last saw her husband Brian, 44, on September 28, 2000. He had gone fishing at Splash Point in Newquay, a favoured spot, but never returned.
"Brian was due to go out on the Lamorna that day with his skipper Gary Eglington in Newquay. But the sea was too rough so he went angling instead," she said. Rescue teams battled treacherous weather conditions throughout the night after police spotted his abandoned motorbike and fishing gear near the fishing spot. His body was eventually found nine days later by fishermen off the Newquay headland.
