Private schools in Devon outperformed their counterparts in Cornwall in the recent GCSE results, new figures have shown.
According to data provided by the Independent Schools Council, just under 77 per cent of pupils at The Maynard School, a girls school in Exeter, received grades A or A* in their exams.
The results, which also showed that nearly all the girls who sat the exams walked away with grades A* to C, made it the top performing school in the two counties.
In second position was Exeter School, were 75 per cent of pupils won the top A* and A grades in their GCSEs.
Truro School in Cornwall was the county's top performer, where 56 per cent of pupils got A* or A grades and 94 per cent got A*-C grades. It was followed by St Joseph's School at Launceston was next in the list, where 55 per cent of pupils won A* and A grades. Some 51 per cent of pupils at Truro High School for Girls meanwhile obtained A* or As.
In Devon, the number of pupils to get the top two grades at West Buckland School, St Margaret's School in Exeter and Plymouth College, was 47 per cent, 45 per cent and 41 per cent respectively.
At St Piran's School in Hayle, Cornwall, where just nine pupils took GCSEs, just over 35 per cent got grade A* and A, while at GEMS Bolitho School in Penzance, a fractionally smaller percentage of their 23 entrants got the two top grades.
At Shebbear College, Beaworthy in Devon, 34 per cent of pupils who took GCSEs obtained A* and A, while at Trinity School in Teignmouth, 21 per cent of pupils got the two top grades.
