ARSON is suspected after a caravan was destroyed in an early morning fire in St Blazey.

Twelve firefighters were scrambled to the blazing caravan -  thought to have contained gas cylinders - in the garden of a house on Rose Hill at around 4am this morning.

Garden waste was also on fire when fire crews from St Austell and Fowey retained arrived at the scene.

Matt Grubb, crew manager from St Austell's green watch, said it took firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using hose reels more than half an hour to put out the blaze, which had engulfed the garden.

He said: "Some of the waste was up against the house and the fire could easily have spread to the house but it didn't."

The house is believed to have been unoccupied and the caravan was destroyed.

Firefighters spent a further 20 minutes dampening down the embers.

Arson is suspected but fire investigators are due to return to the scene late today.

Devon and Cornwall Police have been alerted to the suspicious fire.

Anyone with information should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
