Public meeting to be held in Pool to discuss new light controlled crossing

A PUBLIC meeting is to be held in Pool this evening (Feb 14) to discuss plans for a new zebra crossing in the centre of the village.
The community has been campaigning for more than a decade for a replacement for the existing zebra crossing, which is near the bakery.
For years money has been a stumbling block, but Heartlands set aside £30,000 for the crossing as part of its improvements to the village.
Cornwall Council has begun a public consultation on the new crossing, which it wants to install further down the road, nearer the double roundabout, outside the existing shops.
However, it is proposing a zebra crossing, not a pelican crossing as hoped for by the community.
According to Malcolm Moyle, chairman of Carn Brea Parish Council, while local people  are desperate for the new crossing, they do not want it where Cornwall Council is proposing.
He said: "Cornwall Council came to our parish council meeting and told us they didn't agree with replacing the current zebra crossing.
"They wanted to put it in a different location, outside Knitcraft and Spar.
"We as a parish council unanimously rejected that. We believe that putting a light controlled crossing there is the best way of killing off  the businesses."
Cornwall Council said that its proposed location for the new zebra crossing was closer to pedestrians' "desire line".
Many people, it said, preferred to cross nearer the roundabout, particularly those visiting the shops or travelling to school.
A light controlled crossing would add to delays faced by pedestrians, and the lights could cause confusion at the roundabouts.
Two assessments, one independent, had been carried out to assess the safest location for the new crossing.
Local residents and business owners are invited to tonight's meeting to express their views, which will be fed back to Cornwall Council.
The meeting is taking place at Treloweth Community Hall at 7pm.
