The Chief Executive of the National Health Service visited West Cornwall Hospital in Penzance today and praised the work being done by the new Urgent Care Centre.
Sir David Nicholson described the approach to delivering care within the local community as "innovative" after speaking to patients and staff in the new Urgent Care Centre and refurbished Medical Ward 2.
The hospital has seen a 24 per cent increase in patients using the hospital for planned operations and treatments compared to this time last year since the opening of the Urgent Care Centre.
A recent £5 million investment programme at the hospital has also enabled a wider range of treatments for patients in the fields of audiology, ophthalmology and enhanced diagnostic tests.
Sir David Nicholson said in a statement after his visit: "I am delighted to see the innovative work underway at West Cornwall Hospital and the commitment of health professionals to work together to deliver the very best care for patients.
"This is a time of significant challenge and change in the NHS and it is vital that we remain focused on our core purpose - delivering great outcomes for patients.
"The progress at West Cornwall Hospital is an example to others of what can be achieved when managers, clinicians and communities work together."
Dr Colin Philip, Chair of NHS Kernow said: "I am proud of the work we have done together at West Cornwall Hospital to meet the needs of the local community. The new Urgent Care Centre in Penzance is a perfect example of what can achieved through GP Commissioning and putting the patient at the centre of our health and social care strategy."
Lezli Boswell, Chief Executive at RCHT said: "I am committed to providing an increasing number of our services closer to where people live.
"I want Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust to be recognised as a provider of high quality and compassionate care. West Cornwall Hospital offers a great range of services with great patient feedback and is an excellent partnership model for other local hospitals across the country."
