Work has started on creating a new community building in a Westcountry town after the demolition of the local Guide headquarters.

Guides and a team of local volunteers moved on to the site in Wadebridge to take down the old dilapidated wooden structure where a new building will replace it.

The North Cornwall town helped the Guides raise money to pay for a new headquarters, and they will be sharing it with the community once the work is finished.

Twelve years of fundraising by the town's Guides, Brownies and Rainbows was completed a few months ago when they were awarded £30,000 from the SITA Cornwall Trust. The rest of the £63,000 was raised locally.

The old wooden building on Goldsworthy Road was in such a poor state the girls were forced to use other venues in the town for their activities.

Guiding in Wadebridge involves 120 girls and 30 adults and Ceri Goodfellow, who has been in charge of the fundraising drive, said it was hoped the new headquarters would be built by the beginning of the summer.

"People in Wadebridge have been so supportive, and local groups and organisations will now be able to use our building for events and meetings because it will be open to the community," she said.

Builder Gary Bushen has donated the timber for the frame of the building for free but Mrs Goodfellow said more fundraising was now needed to equip the interior.
