A novice angler who believed his line become hooked on the ocean floor got the shock of his life when his catch began to shift and realisation dawned that his catch was very much alive and very large.

Steve Langmaid, a member of the Fowey Tightliners Sea Angling club was enjoying a fishing trip on the "Jammy Rascal" skippered by friend, Steve Ellis, when he hooked the ocean monster.

The men were fishing a deepwater wreck some 15 miles out of Fowey, and on what was only his second time "wrecking" Steve Langmaid managed to land a fish that comfortably smashed a club record that had only recently been broken.

After a battle with the beast the 32lbs 2oz ling that was eventually reeled in by Steve obliterated the previous ling record of 27lbs caught by James Coggan in November 2012.

The Fowey Tightliners are always happy to welcome new members and will be holding their next meeting at The Royal British Legion, Town Quay, at 8pm on Wednesday, March 20.
