St Austell 14 Wimborne 8
St Austell are one game away from a Twickenham final after holding on for a brilliant victory over Wimborne in the South West Counties final of the Intermediate Cup at Tregorrick Park on Saturday.
The Saints now face either North Walsham or Brighton away in the national semi-final in March and the winners will go through to the Twickenham final on May 4.
Team manager Steve Murley said: "Wimborne are a really good team and they pushed us very hard. It was a fantastic game for the crowd of 700."
Matt Shepherd's three first half penalties established a 9-0 lead for St Austell by half-time and although Tom Moysey reduced the lead with a Wimborne penalty soon after the break, the Saints went 14-3 ahead thanks to a try from replacement Paul Winterbottom in the 55th minute.
From that point it was backs against the wall defending by the home side as Wimborne poured forward and several times threatened to get back into the game with a try.
The drama of the occasion was increased by almost ten minutes of stoppage time, and in the ninth minute Wimborne finally scored through Jason Lewellyn, although the conversion was missed.
Wimborne still needed a converted try to steal victory but they ran out of time and the celebrations began.
