An amateur footballer is recovering in hospital after suffering a life-threatening injury in a football match on Saturday.
Holsworthy captain John O'Donoghue punctured an intestine in a collision with a team-mate during Holsworthy's 11-0 defeat at Helston Athletic in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League. After help from a member of the Helston club who is a part of the Royal Navy air rescue team, he was taken to Royal Cornwall Hospital and underwent a five-hour operation.
Barry Parrish, the Holsworthy chairman, said: "In all the years I have been in football I have seen some bad injuries but I have never heard of anybody puncturing their intestines.
"He is lucky to be here. He's an absolute stalwart for the club. He's a super lad.
"Football gets put into insignificance when it's a human life. We have rung Helston to thank them for everything they have done for John."
While he continues his recovery, Mr O'Donoghue is expected to remain in hospital in Truro for four of five days.
