A Cornwall councillor who told a Hayle disability charity that "all disabled children should be put down" because they cost the council too much money has resigned.
Cllr Collin Brewer, Independent councillor for Wadebridge East, decided to step down from the council overnight amid an unprecedented storm of criticism from people across Cornwall yesterday.
More than 2,800 people voted in a poll on thisiscornwall.co.uk with an overwhelming 97 per cent calling for the resignation of the councillor, who made the comments to a representative of Disability Cornwall in 2011.
In an interview this morning on BBC Radio Cornwall, Cllr Brewer said he was struggling to sleep or eat since the story broke on this website on Tuesday evening.
Parents of disabled children, including glamour model Katie Price, aka Jordan, reacted furiously to the statement and were among hundreds of people who left messages on our website, called The Cornishman, West Briton and Cornish Guardian and posted on Twitter and Facebook.
Clrr Brewer told the radio station today: "I was wrong, I admit it. I will continue to apologise. This is my first indiscretion, not that there is any excuse for that and most are sympathetic to me, those that I've spoken to."
He said he would not rule out standing again for the council at the next elections in May, if he had the support of his constituents.
