Pornographic images discovered on a head teacher's computer were deliberately "planted" in a bid to discredit him, according to his wife.

In May, Bryce Wilby was suspended from his post at Five Islands School on the Isles of Scilly amid claims of financial irregularities.

An audit investigation was launched by the Isles of Scilly Council who employ Mr Wilby and by Cornwall Council, who began an independent inquiry by their own audit team.

Cornwall Council's interim report into the alleged financial misdoings said deleted pornographic images were found on the 46-year-old's computer. According to the document, the images were not illegal and did not involve children.

In a BBC radio interview Mr Wilby's wife Maria said there had been a deliberate attempt to discredit her husband who denies any wrongdoing.

She would not name who she believed was behind the alleged plot to blacken her husband's name and insisted he was innocent.

Mrs Wilby said: "I don't want to implicate anybody else, but I've got a very good idea where they've (the images) come from and it's not my husband. When you consider that the original allegations he was suspended for were all of a financial nature... doesn't it make you wonder where these additional allegations suddenly came from and why in the last four weeks of his working life on Scilly, Bryce suddenly developed a penchant for inappropriate images?"

She said her husband was a good man and believed that a campaign had been unleashed against him.

Mrs Wilby added: "I think it's a deliberate attempt to discredit Bryce."

Mr Wilby's union has advised him not to comment on the matter. Meanwhile a spokesman for the Isles of Scilly Council said Mrs Wilby's claims would be investigated and a response to the media would be released at a later date.

Mr Wilby was suspended on May 18 and subsequently resigned from his post.

Investigations into his management of the school were sparked after the majority of staff at the school signed a vote of no confidence in him.

Cornwall Council's audit has been completed and is due to be discussed by the Isles of Scilly Council on September 27.
