Warm, sunny weather brought many people out on to the beaches yesterday on what was said to be the mildest day of the year so far.

Temperatures only nudged up to 8C in parts of the Westcountry such as Weston-super-Mare, where the Grand Pier sparked against the clear blue sky, but the bright sunshine made for a pleasant spring day for many beachgoers.

Today is expected to be cloudy through the morning with outbreaks of rain and drizzle but is expected to become drier through the afternoon with more brightness at times.

Some areas of southern England are expecting temperatures of around 15C today.

Billy Payne, forecaster for MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "It is certainly looking very mild.

"I do not think we have had temperatures this mild this year so far. It could be about 15C.

"We do believe it is going to be the mildest day of the year so far."

Meteogroup's forecast states that skies may turn fairly cloudy across Cornwall today, while it will be largely dry with sunny spells across Northern Ireland and Scotland.
