ARMED police swooped on a Newquay street yesterday evening after a handgun was found at the scene of a vicious assault.
Three men attacked a 30-year-old man with a metal bar, leaving him covered in cuts and bruises, in Trevose Avenue at around 8.30pm.
Rumours on social networking sites such as Facebook began circulating last night that a man had been shot.
Police confirmed today that a "small handgun" had been discovered at the scene although there is currently no suggestion it was used.
The victim was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro where he was treated for injuries to his head, face and body. He was later released.
No arrests have yet been made and enquiries are on-going. Call 101 with any information on the attack.
