A firefighter has advised people carrying out controlled burns to contact Fire Control first after fire crews responded to a false alarm near New Mill, in west Cornwall, yesterday.
One appliance from Penzance was called to a gorse fire near Carn Galva just before 9pm but discovered a controlled burn being carried out under supervision.
Firefighter Robert Watts said if the person had called Fire Control first the crew would have been saved an unnecessary journey.
He said: "Anybody that does controlled burning should report it to fire control so that if anything comes up in that area they are aware or they can contact who is carrying out the controlled burn to see if they have stopped doing it."
