While other parts of the Westcountry were clearing up after the Spring storms, islands 28 miles off Land's End launched their annual walking festival amid some of the warmest temperatures in the UK.

The seventh Walk Scilly event got under way yesterday with a packed agenda planned for the week ahead designed to showcase the islands at their best.

The opening walks, a full day exploration of Bryher or alternatively a number of half day ambles round St Mary's or St Agnes were all well attended.

Unlike much of the mainland, temperatures enjoyed on the island peaked at pleasant 11 or 12 degrees, although these are predicted to the warmest temperatures for the week duration of the festival.

For the first time, Walk Scilly this year features a range of taster sessions, such as a chance to tee off at St Mary's Golf Club overlooking the harbour or going snorkelling with the seals off St Martins.
