Harvey Biljon was left frustrated by the error count from his team as the Cornish Pirates assistant coach watched his team slip to their second home defeat of the year.

With head coach Ian Davies unable to attend the game after suffering a painful back problem Biljon took control of team affairs as they played their first match for three weeks.

The Pirates had started brightly against a Bedford Blues team who travelled to Cornwall with four defeats in their last six league games. But the Blues snuffed out any doubts about their play-off credentials, taking control of the game in the third quarter with two converted tries.

For the Cornish side any feint hopes of making the Championship play-offs are gone for this season but frequent handling errors, poor execution and a mis-firing lineout prevented them from ever establishing superiority.

"It was a good game and there was a lot of endeavour from both teams to play but on the day I think we were the team which made the most errors," he said. "Both teams were rusty and that led to the handling errors but unforced errors were what ultimately led to Bedford winning.

"It wasn't just handling errors but we missed opportunities by turning the ball over cheaply, we got held up a couple of times, and I feel that by just building that extra phase and exerting that extra bit of pressure we could potentially have pushed home other opportunities."

Biljon agreed that had the Pirates dealt with their problems sooner the scoreboard may have told a different story. He added: "What we have to do is go away and work on what we talked about before this game which was accuracy and not giving the ball away cheaply.

"We discussed not giving Bedford opportunities because they are a team which is good in open field and whilst we were very good in open field here we couldn`t keep hold of the ball."

Biljon paid tribute to a fine performance from flanker Phil Burgess and also fly-half Jonny Bentley despite the New Zealander being forced from the field just before half-time after rolling his ankle.

Bentley had been due to only play around 30 minutes of his comeback game and there was genuine concern around the ground as he limped off after 37 minutes but his injury is described as "not serious" and he now faces a battle to be fit to face Munster in the British & Irish Cup quarter-final next weekend.

Biljon added: "We have to make sure that we look after the bodies in the week and make sure that we are in a position to really perform against Munster in what will be a massive game for this club."
