New solar farm scheme due before planners

Plans by a renewable energy company to build two of its biggest solar farms in the Westcountry are due to be submitted next week.

Lightsource Renewable Energy held public meetings in Launceston in Cornwall and at Buckland Filleigh, near Great Torrington in Devon, last month to discuss its proposals.

It said it was aiming to submit the applications, both of which have been slightly amended, next week with a view to building the solar farms by early autumn.

More than 70 people attended the two meetings in March, which looked at plans to install solar panels on a 12.5 hectare site of land at Hexworthy Farm in Launceston and 16.25 hectares at Chalhanger Farm in Buckland Filleigh.

When constructed, both solar farms, which could cost up to £8m to build, would have a lifespan of 25 years and produce 11.4MW collectively.

A spokesman for the company said there would be little change to the layout of either design but targeted planting has been proposed to screen potential viewpoints for both.

She added that the company is planning to discuss access to the sites further with residents.

Business development director, Conor McGuigan, said: "We are extremely pleased that local residents take interest in our developments as we understand how personal these can be. We endeavour to address concerns as best we can as it's in our best interests to build relationships with our 'potential' long term neighbours."

It is estimated that the two installations will generate the equivalent of the power used by 3,336 homes.

Lightsource has 26 solar farms operational or under construction in Devon and Cornwall, with only a few of its 62 developments outside the South West.
