A FISHERMAN has been rescued from a Spanish fishing vessel 165 nautical miles south west of the Isles of Scilly.
The alarm was raised at around 11pm last night and an Indonesian man was airlifted to hospital in Truro by a helicopter from RNAS Culdrose.
The helicopter was forced to land on the Isles of Scilly on its way to rescue the casualty in order to refuel to ensure it reached the vessel, which was at the limit of its operational area.
Falmouth Coastguard co-ordinated the rescue. Spokesman Richard Williams said: "We requested the assistance of the helicopter from Culdrose who flew to the Isles of Scilly and landed to take more fuel. They then airlifted the casualty to Treliske."
The coastguard and helicopter were involved in a second rescue this morning - airlifting a heart attack patient from the Isles of Scilly to the hospital in Truro.
They were called by South Western Ambulance Service at around 8am today.
