The head of the family that owns St Michael's Mount, Lord St Levan died peacefully at home yesterday aged 94.
John Francis Arthur St Aubyn was the eldest son of the 3rd Lord St Levan.
Born in 1919, he lived on St Michael's Mount until his retirement in 2003 and was passionately fond of the island.
His nephew, James St Aubyn, said: "He touched the hearts of many people during his long life, and will be much missed by his family and many friends in west Cornwall and beyond."
Lord St Levan served in the Navy during World War Two and was awarded a DSC in 1942.
As a veteran of the Arctic convoys, on April 1 this year, only days before he died, he finally received the medal of the Arctic Star.
A long time supporter of the National Trust, which runs St Michael's Mount in partnership with St Aubyn Estates, the charity awarded Lord St Levan its highest honour, the Octavia Hill medal, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the charity over his lifetime.
He had bequeathed the family seat to his nephew, James St Aubyn, born in 1950, who lives on the Mount with his wife Mary and who now succeeds to the title.
