St Mellion golfer Sammie Giles led the 16 qualifiers, from a field of 64, at the 105th Cornwall Ladies' County Championships, following 36 holes played in a strong westerly wind at a sunny Tehidy Park today.
In the morning Giles shot a 78, one behind Carlyon Bay junior Eugenie Knight, but in the afternoon she posted a best of the day 76 to head the qualifiers for the main competition on a two round total of 154, with Knight second on 160 after an 83 in the second round, closely followed by Emily Toy on 162.
The Western Morning News Cup was won by Carlyon Bay (679) followed by Tehidy Park 708 and Perranporth 715.
The match play stage of the competition begins tomorrow, for the top 16 qualifiers with the 36 hole final on Sunday.
