The award winning Citizenship for Life programme is back and has expanded in 2013 by running two programmes; one in the west with twelve students from Mullion School, Penryn College and Falmouth School and one in Newquay with ten students from Newquay Tretherras School and Treviglas Community College.
This memorable twelve month activity and mentoring programme provides youngsters, aged 13-14 and subject to certain challenges in their lives, with a stimulating learning environment where they visit an inspirational selection of individuals, business and organisations around the UK to help broaden their horizons, ignite their true career aspirations and ultimately help them to become better citizens.
The launch day for the west Cornwall programme was held on Thursday 25th April at RNAS Culdrose. All twelve students and their prospective mentors took part in a range of fun but challenging activities throughout the course of the day including; sporty team building activities in the gym, laser rifle shooting and an afternoon full of drama with the station fire service. Students and mentors had to take part in crawler cage exercises, stretcher races and a 'man the hose' activity that involved shooting barrels down with a hose from a distance. The students even got an opportunity to experience a gas controlled flash over fire in a purpose built unit.
The equally brilliant launch day for the Newquay programme was held the day after, on Friday 26th April, at RAF St Mawgan. The ten participating students and their mentors took part in a number of testing activities throughout the day that left most of them red in the face! Flight Lieutenant Charles Paffett (Paff) started proceedings with a number of challenging team building exercises that tested the group both physically and mentally. Corporal Sam Hunt then went onto some hardcore physical exercises in the gym and the day climaxed with an exciting laser tag activity with Flight Sergeant Dan Boswell that took place in an onsite abandoned building.
Both RNAS Culdrose and RAF St Mawgan are taking a very active role in this year's programmes by hosting the launch days and by providing a number of mentors for the programme in the form of Commander John Lea (RNAS Culdrose), Wing Commander Philip Lamb (RAF St Mawgan) and Flight Sergeant Mark Lane (RAF St Mawgan).
A special thanks to everyone at RNAS Culdrose and RAF St Mawgan for being so actively involved in C4L and for hosting two amazing launch days!
