THE QUEEN and Prince Philip are to visit St Ives and St Michael's Mount on Friday, May 17.

The royal visit to St Ives was revealed by The Cornishman two weeks ago after rumours spread around the town.

Now Buckingham Palace has confirmed it, and said it will also include a trip to Marazion and St Michael's Mount on the same day.

The visit will begin when the Queen and Prince Philip arrive at St Erth and then travel along the St Ives branch line on the Royal Train to be met by dignitaries at St Ives.

They will then walk along St Ives seafront to the lifeboat station and proceed on to the Tate gallery.

The party will then travel by car to Marazion and the island in Mount's Bay, where they will make shoe prints on arrival to commemorate the visit.

The Queen and Prince Philip were last in west Cornwall two years ago, visiting Penzance and the Isles of Scilly in glorious sunshine.

A notice sent out by Buckingham Palace on Friday stated that the royal visitors would arrive at St Erth station on Friday, May 17, where they would transfer to a scheduled train to St Ives.

At Tate St Ives they will be given a guided tour of the building, meeting architects, staff and artists.

The gallery has just been given approval for a multimillion-pound expansion.

The royal couple will then head to Marazion, where they will travel by amphibious vehicle to St Michael's Mount and walk to the castle for lunch with the St Aubyn family.

After lunch they will tour the castle and chapel and meet families living on the Mount, before leaving the island and departing from Cornwall.

The visit is a coup for St Ives and Penzance after it was revealed this week that Prince Charles is to start taking on responsibility for some of the Queen's State visits.
