The Trevithick Society is looking for engineering enthusiasts to join it on a unique trip across the channel. The replica of Richard Trevithick's Puffing Devil will take pride of place at the 300th anniversary of the French engineer and inventor, Denis Papin at Chitenay in France from July 19-21. Papin, 1647 – 1713, was an early exponent of steam, and is believed to have been the first to put a piston in a cylinder and move it by steam pressure. He did not create an engine, it was Trevithick who invented the cylindrical boiler and created the first practical high-pressure engine. Papin invented the steam pressure cooker, a significant step forward at the time. Phil Hosken, chairman of the Trevithick Society, said: "This will be a prestigious event with steam vehicles and trains from all over Europe. "The Trevithick Society is seeking volunteers to accompany their locomotive. "Applicants should have a basic appreciation of steam engineering and some knowledge of French would be an advantage but not essential. "Travel and accommodation costs will be paid by the French hosts." Chitenay is just south of Blois, a region of France known for its famous château and other period buildings. For this and other special assignments apply to the Trevithick Society at 01209 716811 or chairman@trevithick-society.org.uk
