The country's best paddleboarders tamed tricky conditions off the Cornish coast at the weekend at they battled it out during the national championships.

Competitors converged on Watergate Bay – said by organisers to be an "iconic" venue – for the event which this year included a range of different disciplines.

Organised by the British Stand Up Paddleboard Association (BSUPA), the men's open surf title was taken by Andre Le Geyt while Maria Buchanan won the women's event.

She also took the honours in the inaugural "Battle of the Paddle", in which competitors followed a set running and paddling circuit, while Charlie Grey and Matt Smilt triumphed in the men's classes.

Described as a cross between canoeing and surfing, stand-up paddleboarders ride large surfboards and use a single bladed paddle to steer, turn and propel themselves through the water.
