A mum has had to travel an additional 35 "terrifying" hours from France to her parents' home in Cornwall after a ferry company stopped her from boarding because she was too pregnant. Katie Kissack, 32, was going to sail from Roscoff to Plymouth with Brittany Ferries so she could give birth at a British hospital next month. But she was told she could not board the ferry at 34 weeks pregnant and was told the upper limit was 32 weeks. She had to travel to Paris and then join the Euro Star to get to London before boarding a train to Plymouth where her father picked her up at 2am this morning. This was all with her 60-year-old mother Jillian and her 2-year-old daughter Elsie, five bags of luggage and a pram. Mrs Kissack said she suffered "severe stomach cramps" during the "stressful" extended journey to her parents' home in St Erme. Speaking to West Briton this morning, she said: "It was absolutely terrifying. We went from having a planned route to it completely falling apart and being stranded with no money, food or any idea of how we were going to get to Cornwall. We had to stay over night in a hotel in Morlaix and we could not sleep because of the stress. "We were stranded in France. My daughter was hungry and we were all so tired. I couldn't believe what was happening." Mrs Kissack acknowledges that she did not read the boarding terms and conditions from Brittany Ferries. Her father, John Tisdale, a retired GP in St Erme, had offered to take responsibility for his daughter's health during the ferry crossing. But this was refused. Mr Tisdale had boarded the ferry in Roscoff so he could take his daughter's dog back to St Erme. He says it was "heart wrenching" to leave his wife and daughter in tears at the ferry port in France. Mrs Kissack lives in Barcelona with her husband. She is originally from Cornwall and was travelling home to give birth at Treliske hospital, where she had a "positive experience" giving birth to her first daughter. The couple had already travelled for two days by car from Barcelona to Roscoff, before Mrs Kissack was turned away from the ferry. Her husband had flown home after leaving Mrs Kissack in the care of her parents at Roscoff. A spokesperson from Brittany Ferries said they had the "deepest sympathies for Mrs Kissack, but the rules are clear." The spokesperson said: "The decision to deny her boarding was taken entirely for her own safety. "The ship's Captain has responsibility for the safety of all his passengers, and in this case, because Mrs Kissack was already 34 weeks pregnant, he rightly took the decision not to allow her to travel. "This decision was not taken lightly and was made entirely with Mrs Kissack's safety in mind. "A full refund was given to Mrs Kissak and her mother."
