REPAIR works have begun on St Martin's Road in Looe - where a landslip resulted in the death of Susan Norman - and should be complete in time for the summer holidays. A two-part scheme has been designed to stabilise the road, which was closed following the fatal landslip on March 22, claiming the life of 68-year-old Susan Norman. The first phase began on Monday May 20 and involves sinking concrete piles every 50cm along a 15-metre stretch adjoining the property affected by the landslip, with inclined rock-anchors to provide extra stability and the area capped with a concrete edge beam. Costed at £100,000 to £150,000, the works are expected to take between eight to ten weeks and the road will then reopen under traffic light control by July 19, before the start of the school holidays. "We appreciate that the ongoing closure of St Martin's Road is causing problems for many local residents and businesses and are committed to re-opening the road as quickly as possible," said Paul Masters, the Council's Interim Chief Executive. A drop-in session is being held Guildhall in East Looe on Wednesday May 22 between 2pm and 7pm for local businesses to discuss the road closures and business rates. During the session local councillors, representatives from the Council's economic development and localism teams will be on hand to offer advice. A highways officer will also be there to explain and answer queries about the St Martin's Road scheme. The second phase of the scheme is due to take place in the winter. Information on the works which are taking place in Looe and advice and activities for local residents and businesses is available on the Council's website at www.cornwall.gov.uk/looelatest
