A CLAMPDOWN on dog-owners who allow their pets to foul public areas has been launched in Falmouth and Penryn.
The issue was listed as a top priority by Penryn residents in the latest Have Your Say police initiative.
Working with the county and town councils, the police will target the problem over the next three months.
And as PCSO Lewis Vague discussed how to address it with the clerk Michelle Davey, he spotted a dog wandering the streets, witnessed it fouling, followed it home and issued the owner with an £80 fixed-penalty fine.
He said: "It is the first time in five years I have actually seen it happen."
Miss Davey said: "It is the most common complaint in the office, but even when people know who the culprit is, they don't want to say.
"The police and enforcement officers have to have a name and/or address or catch them in the act to take action.
"So if you know who these irresponsible people are, or when and where they walk their dogs, please let us know so we can deal with it."
Meanwhile Falmouth Town Council has made a 'dogs on lead' direction order for Kimberley Park and Falmouth Cemetery.
Clerk Mark Williams said: "At both sites irresponsible dog-owners have caused issues for other users trying to enjoy the sites."
If a dog causes a nuisance and the owner fails to put it on or keep it on a lead, they could receive an £80 fine or prosecution.
"It is very much hoped this will prevent issues that have been experienced.
"If this measure does not work, reluctantly the council will consider a complete ban on dogs in those areas," said Mr Williams.
Councillor David Sterratt added: "We hope dog-owners will become more responsible."
