The newly elected Lanteglos by Fowey Parish Council have made re-opening the local public toilets a key priority. The council which was chosen in one of the few contested elections in the county are wasting no time in getting to grips with a big problem in the area. Public toilets at the St Saviours car park in Polruan and at the National Trust car park at Frogmore have been closed since January. With funds tight the new Councillors have set up a community action plan to resolve the situation and, with the help of local residents, have rolled their sleeves up and undertaken the task of refurbishing, redecorating and cleaning the facilities themselves. The National Trust has stepped in to help refurbish the toilets at Frogmore, which are now once again open to the public. While Councillors, Vic Trueman and John Adams are working away on the St Saviours toilets with the help of local residents, Nigel Jolliff, Kath Welch and Carol Evans. The facilities at St Saviours are just days away from being ready. Mrs Welch said: "I was so disgusted with the situation that I wrote a complaint letter and I am really pleased to help make sure they can be reopened." Newly elected Parish Council Chairman, Councillor Pat Moore added: "We were determined to get good facilities for the visitors who come to this area. "I am really grateful to the leadership of Councillors Trueman and Adams for moving so swiftly to sort this out. "The community elected us to deal with issues that are important to them and this is the first aspect we are tackling. This is a short term solution and we are working on a longer term resolution of the problem." The Council is currently looking for companies willing to take on the cleaning contract and ask any interested parties to contact the chairman of the Parish Council on – 01726 870340. "Tourism is very important to the local economy," said Mrs Moore, "but the facilities are also used by local people, such as the watchkeepers in the local National Coastwatch Institution lookout.'
