Three students from Fowey Community College will have the honour of creating the first exhibition for the newly re-opened Old Press Gallery in St Austell. Laura Thomason, Ellie Bowker and Izzy Sutcliffe, all 15, will display the final pieces of work from their students Arts Award challenge between Monday, June 17, and Sunday, June 30. The Arts Council England and Trinity College London created award offers young people the opportunity to attain accredited qualifications. Fowey Community College itself was named as a Gold Artsmark School in 2012 for its outstanding arts provision. Having completed their Bronze Arts Award last year the three students are now tackling the next level including the forthcoming exhibition. Laura Thomason said: ""I can't wait to run this exhibition and display the work I have spent so much time on." Ellie Bowker explained that the trio have been working hard on individual pieces of art under their own themes, for Ellie that theme is landscape where she has developed a series of illustrations and paintings. Gallery owner, Charlie Ratcliffe, is delighted to be able to give the girls the opportunity to show off their talents at the recently refurbished gallery. "I am looking forward to seeing some really vibrant work in this lovely bright space," she said, "I am really impressed that the girls are organising, planning and running the whole event themselves. It shows a real commitment to their work." Fowey Community College headteacher, John Perry, said he has been impressed with the dedication shown by the girls towards attaining the award in addition to studying hard for their GCSE's an also highlighted the key role of the school's art technician, Emma Bray. He added: "Emma has supported the girls at every stage and I wish them well in their exhibition. I am certain it will be a huge success." For 14 days from June 17 to June 30 the girls work will be displayed at The Old Press Gallery, 10 Biddicks Court, St Austell, with doors open from 10am to 4pm. A private viewing will take place on Friday, June 21, from 6pm to 9pm. The current excitement felt by the students in the run up to the exhibition was summed up by Izzy Sutcliffe, who said: "It feels great to be producing something so independent. I am super excited to run an exhibition and show off my work to visitors."
