Daredevil surfers Tom Butler and Ben Skinner seized the opportunity to ride one of the world's most dangerous waves when it rolled into the coast of North Cornwall yesterday.

The Cribbar, a huge reef surf break unique to Newquay, appears under certain Atlantic swell conditions and can reach heights of up to 30 feet.

Yesterday the gusty winds and challenging conditions didn't deter the two surfers, even though at one point they nearly came to grief when a jet ski taking them offshore failed.

Mr Butler, a former GB and England surf champion who now concentrates on hunting big waves, said it had been an awesome experience.

"It's just not an everyday thing when big waves happen," he said. "They are very rare and when they break it's really exciting.

"It's even more exciting when they happen in Newquay, which is my home town."

The two surfers had to ride two kilometres out to sea to catch the Cribbar.

However, there was a tricky moment when one jet ski cut out, forcing Mr Butler to quickly lash the two together to prevent it being dashed on the rocks.

He estimated that the Cribbar was up to six times his own height and despite high winds riding it yesterday had been "good fun."
