A group of Saltash pensioners turned pop stars are calling on members of the public to back their bid to top the charts this weekend. Four sprightly ladies, aged between 79 and 94, from St Anne's Care Home, are among hundreds of residents and staff from Anchor care homes across the country who feature in the charity single See Yourself. The song, which was released to support a campaign to stop loneliness in the elderly, has already reached number 1 in the Amazon download chart and the band hope it will make the top 40 this Sunday. Band member Brenda Hodge, who lives at St Anne's, said: "I am thrilled to be a member of the Anchor Community Band despite being 79. "I cannot believe our charity song has been released in the charts," she added. The pop princess said she hoped the single would raise awareness of the campaign and urged people to download it. "It has been such fun but behind all our hard work is a very serious message," she said. "The Campaign to End Loneliness has found that more than one million people aged over 65 across the country are often or always lonely." Gina Shiers, business manager at St Anne's, said the group were keen to give the single one last boost before Sunday's chart. "Yesterday we were sitting at number 80," she said. "But we are really trying to drive it to get in the top forty and raise money for a really good cause." The song was written after thousands of Anchor residents competed a questionnaire asking about their memories and attitudes to life. Musical director Carl Martin, who wrote the song after reading the responses, said: "It's a really powerful song because the words are telling younger people that older generations are exactly the same as them, with just a bit more life experience." He urged the public to support the campaign and buy the single. "It's now time to go out and buy the song to raise money for a fantastic cause and help us get into the charts," he said. See Yourself is available to download from Amazon and iTunes.
