A MAN had to be rescued from a Newquay beach after he had a quick nap – but woke to find himself cut off by the rising tide.
The resort's RNLI lifeboat team were called into action at around 7.10pm on Wednesday evening when the man made a panicked 999 call.
After a brief search the man was found at the southern end of Towan beach, sheltering in a cove below Belushi's bar.
With high tide due in an hour, the RNLI volunteers took him onto the inshore lifeboat and landed him safely, unharmed, at Newquay harbour at 7.25pm.
Gareth Horner, volunteer lifeboat operations manager, said: "By the time the man woke up, the tide had risen to within two metres of him, but fortunately he was able to raise the alarm on his mobile phone."
