POLL: St Agnes residents to have their say on council-owned land

St Agnes residents are to be asked their views on what should happen to a controversial plot of land bought by the parish council. Last year St Agnes Parish Council spent £55,000 on the one acre green site, off Penwinnick Road, saying it was a sound investment. But the deal sparked huge controversy among locals who were not consulted on the purchase and believed it would be used as a site for new parish rooms. On Monday night councillors threw out its plans to relocate, put forward by former members who resigned on mass in the run up May's elections. They rejected previous claims that its base, a former bank on Vicarage Road, was 'unfit for purpose' and said it would take no further action to move or sell-up. It also said it would hold at least one meeting per year in each ward, renting local rooms or halls, on a trial basis. The decision means the land now has no obvious purpose, that councillor Gill Doble described as a "white elephant", adding: "Nobody wanted this land which we're now lumbered with. We need to ask people what they want?" Councillor John Slater visited the site, opposite Morgans in the Barns, saying it was becoming overgrown. He told members: "I wanted to see what we had inherited. The hedges are encroaching into the field, if it's not dealt with it will become wild. We are not able to sell the land for less than we paid for it. We could leave it as a nature reserve or grazing to off-set the purchase costs?" Councillor David Lovering said the plot was too small to be used for grazing, saying: "The access is very poor. It's on a dangerous road. If you cut the grass it will grow like mad." Other suggestions put forward included using it as a pet cemetery, or calling in Cornwall Wildlife Trust to advise on it becoming a nature reserve. Councillor Tony Child said the plot wasn't big enough to be used as a solar panel farm. What should St Agnes Parish Council do with this plot of land? Vote in our poll to the right of this article.
