A GROUP of job hunters have been given the tools to find themselves a career thanks to a course run by the Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service.

The Phoenix Works team supports people to promote teamwork and communication skills as well as boosting their self confidence.

The latest round of recruits will celebrate completing the course at a special event at Penzance Community Fire Station on Thursday, June 20.

"These courses are an excellent example of how, by working with partners such as Jobcentre Plus, we can really make a difference to the lives of these individuals," said Geoff Brown, Cornwall Council cabinet member for homes and communities.

"I am delighted to celebrate the people who have embraced this opportunity to learn from the best."

The course, which was funded by Jobcentre Plus Devon, Cornwall and Somerset aims to provide support and training to increase the employment opportunities of those who take part.

Referred by the local Jobcentre, all participants are given the opportunity to gain qualifications in Improving Own Learning and Performance as well as being shown emergency life support techniques.

Throughout the course participants get the opportunity to learn and develop skills by participating in fire and rescue service drills and activities, which can be put in to practice when looking for opportunities in the job market.
