A Cornish social enterprise has won the UK's top green environment award.
The Wadebridge Renewable Energy Network received the 2013 Ashden Award for Community Energy at a ceremony in London last night.
Judges praised the network for its achievements in engaging the whole community in saving energy and generating local sustainable energy, which is helping cut fuel bills as well as creating new local jobs since ity was set up two years ago.
The Ashden Awards were set up in 2001 to champion practical, local energy solutions that cut carbon, protect the environment, reduce poverty and improve people's lives. The Duke of Cornwall is its patron.
The 2013 award was presented to WREN by Forum for the Future founder director Jonathon Porritt at a ceremony at the Royal Geographical Society in London, hosted by broadcaster Emma Freud.
WREN receives £10,000 in recognition of its achievements.
Professor Stephen Frankel, Chair of the WREN Board, said: "This is just brilliant news. We want to make it normal for people to be able to benefit from taking control of energy, and this award gives us confidence that we are going in the right direction.''
Only two years after its foundation, one in ten people in Wadebridge are now members of WREN.
