A PENSIONER is recovering after being rescued from his smoke-filled home last night.
Firefighters were scrambled to the scene just before 9.30pm after being alerted by an automatic fire alarm in his sheltered accommodation, Kenneth Launder Court in Manley Road.
They entered the smoke-logged flat wearing breathing equipment and rescued the elderly man.
An ambulance also attended as he was suffering from smoke inhalation, and he was later taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.
The burning had been caused by items left on top of a cooker.
Firefighters removed these and doused them with water in the nearby sink.
Once the fire was out, they used a ventilation fan to clear the smoke from the flat and corridors of the complex.
