Cornwall Select team bidding for glory at Newquay Surf Sevens

The Newquay Surf 'Sevens', which is the biggest Rugby Sevens Event in the South West, takes place this weekend. Over the two days at Newquay's Sports Centre and at Treviglas Community College there are a range of competitions for all levels, with some of the best teams from all over Europe taking part. On Saturday there's the Men's Elite Event that has attracted some of the the best men's Sevens teams, and representing Cornwall will be a Cornish Pirates 'Cornwall Select' team, which has been coached by Gavin Cattle and have trained at Penair School. The competing teams include present holders the British Army, who are in Pool 'A' alongside North Wales Exiles, Zoo Sport Ronin Sevens, and Cobalt Crusaders, while the Cornwall Select team is pooled with last year's runners-up Storm, plus the Apache Raiders and Warlingham Wizards. Match action starts at 10am on Saturday when the British Army face North Wales Exiles, and at 10.40am the Cornwall Select side play their opening game against Storm. The final is scheduled for 5pm. The Cornwall Select squad is: Max Bodilly (Cornish Pirates), Richard Bright (Cornish All Blacks), Mark Carlyon (Truro), Ben Chenoweth (St. Austell), Ed Court (Brighton University), Alex Ducker (Penryn), Richard Friend (Cornish All Blacks), Tom Hendrikson (Cornish Pirates), Tom Notman (Redruth), Lewis Paterson (Cornish All Blacks), Matt Shepherd (St. Austell), Ollie Turton (University of South Wales). The Cornish Pirates Cornwall Select Sevens team will also take part in the inaugural World Club Sevens to be held at Twickenham on the 17-18th August when they will be playing Touch Rugby Sevens against a British & Irish Lions Legends selection.
